Stay Woke!: World Making in a Time of Authoritarianism

Y. Espiritu  W 12:00p-2:50p  CCC- Comunidad

This team-taught course, led by invited faculty across campus, students and community groups, is designed to provide a critical, historical, comparative, global and multidisciplinary examination of the current political moment. Topics covered include: The “Protection of The Nation From Foreign Terrorist Entry Into The United States" Executive Order, immigration and deportation, global warming controversy, the privatization of higher education and the neoliberal university, the “fake news” syndrome, the making of the American working class, as well as historical and contemporary examples of counter-movements. The goal of the course is to provide students with the theoretical and practical tools needed to think deeply and carefully about how to build principled communities and movements in this political moment. Course assignments will be action-oriented and projects-based.

SPACES Practicum: Student Activism, Education, and Empowerment D. Taylor-Garcia MW 5:00p-6:20p

This course will engage in a critical analysis of the material consequences of educational inequity as an institutional issue and within the context of UCSD. Another key component will be a history of UCSD student activism and organizing that enables the work we do for marginalized students, and historically underrepresented and underserved communities. This will be central in contextualizing the purpose and meaning of our work as student staff at SPACES, the Student Promoted Access Center for Education and Service.

SPACES Practicum: The Politics of Desirability

D.Taylor-Garcia

MW
11:00a-12:20p

In this course we will engage in a critical analysis of cultural, social, and structural implications of desirability. We will do so by analyzing the ideational work done to mark certain bodies as desirable and others as undesirable. In particular, how the reification of these constructions has mutually defined and reproduced themes such as: racialization, anti-blackness, ability, fatness, sexuality, queerness. Lastly, how these constructions translate into access to resources and social capital.

SPACES Practicum: do UC U(s) K. Wayne Yang W 5:00-7:50p Upper Division Elective
Do you know the history of activism and the current issues at the 10 University of California campuses? UC is one of the largest public institutions in the world - our struggles are struggles of global scale, that we face locally at each campus. UC President Janet Napolitano (former Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security) has just proposed 5% fee hikes for the next 5 years. How do students at separate campuses organize locally, while struggling transnationally?
Join us in the SPACES practicum - one of the only student-facilitated courses at UC San Diego - which itself arose from students reclaiming our educational space in 2007. We will be exploring specific histories and current examples of activism at each of the 10 UC campuses. Come and learn strategies and traditions of student empowerment.

This course is intended to facilitate an analysis of the relationship between food and foodways, power relations, and the process of meaning-making. This course is designed as an investigation to the ways in which the state and everyday people produce meanings and subjectivity in relation to food including but not limited to everyday food practices, food justice movements, hungers strikes, and force feedings. In addition, we will analyze how race is mutually constituted and relational through different food practices.

Upper Division Elective
This course presents Asian American cinema through a mix of critical studies and curating. The course will alternate between sessions that present "canonical" Asian American films and videos, and brand-new works submitted to the San Diego Asian Film Festival in Spring 2014. This approach reveals issues of race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality, and citizenship as shifting, historically-contingent formations in dialogue with the students’ own understandings of Asian American communities today.

What does critical consciousness mean if it never leaves the classroom? How can we translate the academic discourse of social justice to our communities and families in accessible and meaningful ways? How can student activists engage with UCSD on an institutional and personal level without becoming burnt out and discouraged? This course seeks to address some of the gaps between the academic and institutional discourse of social justice and the lived realities of those it affects.

As we explore and try to find our “place(s)” in society and our communities where we can exist in the midst of the margins, borders, boundaries, and beyond, we may find ourselves trying to discover and make sense of who we are -- the self . Often times, in this process, we are misplaced  - put in the wrong place and lost temporarily, we are displaced - forced to move out of our comfort zones, and we are replaced - substituted and no longer given a place. As these processes occur and take shape; this can lead to a detachment from the self as we are thrown in various directions and found at various intervals, rather than all together. Join us in navigating, placing, and piecing together the scattered self. For more information please click here.
