Minor Requirements


THE ETHNIC STUDIES MINOR CONSISTS OF A TOTAL OF SEVEN (7) COURSES.

Students wishing to minor in Ethnic Studies have TWO (2) options:
of taking two (2) four-unit lower division courses in the history and theoretical dimensions of ethnic diversity in the United States from the sequence ETHN 1A-B-C and five (5) upper division approved elective courses. OR
of taking two (2) four-unit upper division courses in analytic and comparative study of ethnicity: ETHN 100 & ETHN 190 and five (5) upper division approved elective courses.

OPTION [1] - LOWER DIVISION REQUIREMENTS + MINOR ELECTIVES (see below)

Choose two (2) four-unit lower division courses from (ETHN 1A, ETHN 1B, ETHN 1C):

  • ETHN 1A. Introduction to Ethnic Studies: Population Histories of the United States (4)
  • ETHN 1B. Introduction to Ethnic Studies: Immigration and Assimilation in American Life (4)
  • ETHN 1C. Introduction to Ethnic Studies: Race and Ethnic Relations in the United States (4)

OPTION [2] - UPPER DIVISION REQUIREMENTS + MINOR ELECTIVES (see below)

Both ETHN 100 AND ETHN 190 are required four-unit upper division courses for Option 2.

  • ETHN 100. Theories and Methods in Ethnic Studies (4)
  • ETHN 190. Research Methods: Studying Racial and Ethnic Communities (4)

 

MINOR ELECTIVES:

Please note: at least TWO (2) , but no more than THREE (3) of the five (5) elective courses must be selected from either the Ethnic Studes History and Social Sciences courses (listed below in section 2B)
OR the Ethnic Studies Literature and Cultural Expressions courses (listed below in section 2D). No more than two (2) independent study courses (ETHN 197,198, or 199) may be used to satisfy this requirement.

You may use courses from the Language, Ethnicity, and Institutional Discourses group (listed below in section 2C) for the remaining elective courses, but courses from other departments may NOT be used.

GRADING:

  • To satisfy the requirements for the minor, lower- and upper-division courses must be completed with a P, C-, or better grade.
  • Except for independent study course electives (ETHN 197,198,199) which are always taken with a Pass/No Pass grade option, students minoring in Ethnic Studies may take one course, either lower- or upper-dvision, with a Pass/No Pass grade option.
