Graduate Student Notes

Spring 2017:

  • Alborz Ghandehari, PhD candidate, was awarded the prestigious Mellon/American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) Dissertation Completion Fellowship for 2017-18.

  • Amrah Salomon Johnson, PhD candidate, has received the prestigious Ford Foundation Dissertation Fellowship for 2017-18. Her dissertation is titled "Beyond Nation: Politics of Abolition, Decolonization, and Fugitivity in the Transnational Mexican Revolution".

  • Cynthia Vazquez, PhD Student, received a UCSD Frontiers of Innovation Scholars Program (FISP) Award of $25,000 for her research project “Kumeyaay/Kumiai Transborder Education in the US and Mexico”. This is the 2nd year she has received a FISP award for her research.

Fall 2016:

  • Alborz Ghandehari, PhD candidate, was awarded the Comparative Ethnic Studies Essay Prize by the American Studies Association for his paper "Struggle and the Politics of Translation: Translating Intersectionality in Iran”.  The award is given to the best paper to be presented at the annual meeting in critical ethnic studies in comparative, transnational and global contexts. 

Spring 2016:

  • Salvador Zarate, PhD candidate, has received the prestigious Ford Foundation Disertation Fellowship for 2016-17. His ground breaking dissertation is titled Engendering Life: Race and Gender in Domestic and Landscape Labor in Orange County. He also is a recipient of the 2015/16 UCSD Distinguished Teaching Award for Graduate Students.   • Martin Boston, PhD candidate, has been elected as the Vice President of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion for the Graduate Student Assembly for 2016-17.

  • Yessica Garcia, PhD student, was selected as a UC Public Scholar to participate in the Public Scholars Program based at UC Davis. http://publicscholars.ucdavis.edu/scholars/
